A lot of people who have a travel insurance policy wonder whether or not they are financially protected from all kinds of civil unrest, starting from minor strikes and up to dangerous wars. The answer to this question is quite unsettling – in most cases, such disastrous situations are not covered. However, you should not lose all your hope. It still makes perfect sense to check the certificate of your own insurance policy to be absolutely sure.
But the fact remains true – nearly all the companies exclude war in general and civil war in particular, no matter declared or undeclared, from their covered events. In essence, this means that in case your own trip is delayed or canceled entirely because of unrest, you will probably not be entitled to any payment from the travel insurance provider.
However, there are a few policies that offer upgrades of your coverage that include “political evacuation”. Also, other options may include “riot” under all the covered reasons for travel delays.
Important issues you should consider when traveling to areas experiencing civil unrest:
1) You cannot cancel the trip because you simply feel that you might be unsafe at the chosen destination unless you buy special coverage that protects your cancellations regardless of their reasons.
2) You must purchase your Cancel for Any Reason travel coverage within a month of your first deposit payment. Also keep in mind that such insurance always costs more than other options.
3) A Cancel for Any Reason insurance policy generally pays only a percentage of the total amount which you have spent on the trip. So, you should know that you will definitely not be able to get back the entire sum of money with this type of coverage. But still, you will be allowed to cancel the trip without having to explain the reasons for it which is a great advantage.
