Catching up with Bipasha Basu

For those of you, who don’t know Bipasha basu, Shame on you! But just so that we do not have any complications getting to know this charming lady, she is an Indian actress who has been featured in many Hindi films. She has also played a role in Bengali, Telugu and Tamil movies.

Her debut was in 2001 in the movie “Anjabee” alongside Akshay Kumar. Her role in the movie, earned her the title of “Filmfare award for best female debut” followed by “Raaz” in 2002 the movie happened to be that particular year’s most successful thriller.

Over the years she has become an icon in the Indian film industry and has never failed to impress.
Speaking to HI!! On a recent trip to Sri Lanka Bispasha said her mantra and philosophy in life and living is “You want to be a giver. It’s great but if you don’t love yourself and learn to take care of yourself no one is going to be able to make you happy. I very strongly believe in the philosophy of loving yourself. You need to love every bit of yourself to honestly give back to your career and life! If one is satisfied, one becomes a better person and is more willing to give.
All these years, in the hustle of everyday life, I had forgotten to love me. I was inspired by my mother and that is when I hit upon the name of my fitness DVD, ‘Baby Love Yourself’. Nothing or no one can make you as happy as you prefer to make yourself. When I launched my DVD, something in me changed. It’s been two years and something about me has changed since then. I’ve started loving myself and respecting myself more. I am not okay with people who try to put me down and make me feel small. This name was God-given. I was looking for a name and it gave me direction."

Touching on the topic of love and marriage she smiles and says “I can proudly say that I make a fantastic girlfriend and will make a fantastic wife.”
She adds, “I’m a giver and  I like myself this way. If I could give some happiness to people and share the benefit, then I would think I’ve done something good in my life. When I was younger, I used to give and expect back but now when I give, I don’t expect anything!”

When speaking about her stay in Sri Lanka she said she has “been quite relaxed” and was just after a “yummy dish of fish.” She added that she had just finished work on her new fitness DVDs which include some challenging workouts both for the ladies as well as for the gents.

When asked about her work and her life she confidently replies “acting is my profession but that does not make it my life.”

She says if she could take one thing from Sri Lanka and share it with the people of India it would be the beach! “I am a beach bum, so I would love to take back the clean beaches."

With a career spanning over a decade Bipasha is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Her passion for staying fit and a clear vision with what she wants to do in life. Bipasha has no intention of holding back!

A Land Like No Other: 5 Rapes A Day, But Does Anyone Care

Last week’s alleged rape of a 47-year old woman in Wijerama and an attempted rape of a 25-year old German tourist in Chilaw, have once again raised the question, how safe are women in our country—both local and foreign. According to statistics, five rapes are reported daily while the unreported cases could make the figure higher.
Among the women’s’ group workers and activists who spoke to the Sunday Times, Lak Vanitha Front president Shanthini Kongahage voicing concern said many women relied on three-wheeler drivers to ask for road directions. She said many of them also opted to take three wheelers for short distances especially if they were too exhausted to travel home after work in over crowded buses. “ It is unfortunate for a woman to be a victim of rape at around 7.30 p.m. near a place close to the Colombo city,” she said commenting on the incident in Wijerama.
“There were a number of rape and murder cases in Kahawatte last year and a female foreigner was raped by a gang that included the Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman. Though investigations were conducted with regard to the rape there was no final report,” she said.
Tourists enjoying the sun and the sand on a beach in the South. Incidents of sexual harassmnt of foreigners have been on the rise.
Sherine Samarasooriya of Voice of Women said it was important to join and actively get involved in a public outcry against rapists.
“When we travel to villages, women plead with us to open up shelters where they can spend the night when they are chased away by their drunken husbands at night. Similarly these shelters should be put up for women who travel long distances. The state should support organisations to initiate such programmes,” she said.
Women and Media Collective’s Dr. Sepali Kottegoda said since the gang rape of Rita John in the late 90’s there have been thousands of reported rapes and murders but unfortunately there hasn’t been enough public reaction and activism.
“Politicians are often ignorant of the fact that rape cases are increasing in the country and most often local politicians or their goons are involved. There is a tendency of justifying the crime stating that the victim is a sex worker. Nobody, not even a sex worker should be subject to rape,” she charged.
This increasing trend could drive away female tourists, especially Europeans who choose the country as a getaway holiday destination. On Wednesday, a 25 year-old German national who was holidaying in Iranawila, Chilaw narrowly escaped being raped by a local while she was sunbathing on the beach.
According to Chilaw police the foreigner was part of a group who had come to the country a couple of days before and who had chosen a beach front motel in Chilaw. On Wednesday (30) evening she had been lying on the beach enjoying the sunset, when the 28-year-old suspect had jumped on her body and attempted to allegedly rape her. However the woman had managed to kick the suspect and run to the motel. The suspect was arrested and produced in courts.
A European national who works as a gender consultant in Sri Lanka told the Sunday Times that a number of European women who come as tourists complain of being harassed but most do not go to the extent of complaining to police fearing it would ruin their holiday.
“A white girlfriend was really shocked and angered after a man on a motorbike grabbed her breasts outside her apartment and a lot of my friends get routinely stopped on the street and accused of prostitution for merely being a white female,” she charged.
She said while the increasing incidents of rape were horrendous and sickening, the incidents were examples of how the country ignores and accepts violence against women and girls across the country. “This would be the same with foreign women as most men here assume that white women are there solely for their pleasure,” she said.
In recent years there have been many cases of foreign women being raped. On Christmas Eve, 2011, a British national was killed and his foreign companion allegedly gang raped by a group led by Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman.
Similarly, the same year, another five men were arrested while attempting to molest a 23-year-old Swedish national who was walking on the beach in Negombo. Another woman from New Zealand reported being harassed in Mihintale where two men had tried to drag her to a public toilet while her husband was not in sight.
A South African tourist was allegedly raped by hotel employee in Kalptiya, while another incident was reported from Odiha, Matara where the motel owner had attempted to rape a 25 year-old Dutch tourist.
According to statistics from the Sri Lanka Tourist Development Authority, tourists from Western Europe top the list of tourists in 2011 and 2012. Last year, 373,063 had arrived in the country with the vast majority from Britain, Germany and France followed by South Asian tourists.
Meanwhile Tourist Police Director SSP Maxi Proctor said it was important to take harassment related complaints seriously and implement new measures to curb the rising menace. “We are in the process of establishing Tourist Police posts in all tourist-oriented destinations from coastal areas to inland areas like Nuwara-Eliya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa,” he said.
At present there are only two police posts, in Hikkaduwa and Negombo. According to him, new posts will be established in Mount Lavinia and Arugam Bay too. SSP Proctor said new emergency hotline numbers would be introduced and given to tourists at the airport enabling them to report any harassment or attempted rape during their stay.
“There have been complaints with regard to harassment especially by beach boys and masseurs,” he said. Yuveraj Athukorale, director (media) of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (formerly Tourist Board) said there have been complaints of harassment especially from groups of men in three-wheelers and men who pose as masseurs.
“Tourists who lodge in cheap motels are often victims of such violence. It is important to stay in Tourist Board-approved resorts and motels. We have requested the police to raid massage parlours especially in tourist destinations. Tourists can also call our hotline 1912,” he said.
Meanwhile Tourist Hotels Association Past President Srilal Miththapala said there have been reports of attempted rapes in the recently declared tourist destinations.
“Places like Tangalle, Chilaw and Matara are among the newly declared tourist zones and there are many inland tourist zones as well. There are huge cultural differences and people in the areas still believe that white skin means promiscuity, especially because of their independence, attire and body language,” he added.
He said tourist hotels were willing to support the police in educating the public in these areas. National Mental Health Institute Director Dr. Jayan Mendis said the country failed to provide therapy to rapists apart from the prison sentence or bail. “Rape is not about uncontrolled lust. It’s about control over another person and an opportunistic act of violence,” he said adding that rapists are those with personality disorders and even after being released to the society after serving prison sentence, they tend to commit the same crime unless the person goes through intense therapy.
According to United States’ Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, 50–90 percent of rapes go unreported and about six percent of rapists will never spend a day in jail.
The Asian Human Rights Commission said in a statement that in Sri Lanka while there is a public acknowledgement of the existence of widespread lawlessness involving particularly shocking offences against women, the public itself reacts to these events apathetically.
“There is no energetic pursuit of justice or demands for accountability from the government. While the rest of the south Asian countries are rising to demand better performance from their governments and the creation of efficiently functioning law enforcement agencies to protect all citizens with particular emphasis on the more vulnerable groups such as women, in Sri Lanka crimes continue to take place with impunity,” the report said.

WikiLeaks: Solheim Returned To Sri Lanka ‘Empty-Handed’ And Urged GSL To Take A ‘Bold Step’

“Norwegian Special Envoy Erik Solheim has returned to Sri Lanka ‘empty-handed,’ Dhanapala said, with no fresh initiative to offer from the Tigers. (Note: Solheim arrived in Sri Lanka September 14 and will depart o/a September 17. End note.) According to Dhanapala, Solheim has urged the GSL to take a ‘bold step’–which Dhanapala interpreted to mean accept the Tigers’ controversial proposal for an interim administration as a basis for resumed negotiations–but could not offer the GSL any reciprocal assurance that such a ‘bold step,’ if offered, would be accepted by the LTTE. Without some kind of assurance of how the LTTE would react, the ‘bold step’ urged by Solheim would be nothing but ‘a leap in the dark,’ Dhanapala said, adding that he was ‘puzzled’ that the Norwegians seemed to expect the GSL to take that political risk. He expressed little confidence that Solheim would make an effort to impress upon his LTTE interlocutors the Government’s political constraints.” the US Embassy Colombo informed Washington.

A Leaked ‘Confidential’ US diplomatic cable, dated September 15, 2004, updated the Secretary of State regarding and a  meeting Ambassador  Jeffrey J. Lunstead had with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Peace Secretariat head Jayantha Dhanapala . The Colombo Telegraph found the related leaked cable from the WikiLeaks database. The cable is signed by the US Ambassador to Colombo Jeffrey J. Lunstead.
The ambassador wrote; “Because the GSL is the more rational party, the Ambassador said, it unfairly receives more pressure from other actors to be flexible and offer compromises. In addition, the aid given by other governments and mulitlateral organizations gives them the opportunity to apply pressure on the GSL, he noted. The LTTE, on the other hand, seems generally unresponsive to such pressure, readily subordinating incentives like socio-economic development for its purported constituents to political issues. How can donor governments help provide positive incentives for the LTTE to accept negotiations? the Ambassador asked. The GSL has already undertaken some confidence-building measures–for example, the President’s announcement that she is willing to include the controversial ‘interim arrangement’ on a possible agenda for negotiations–and could do more, like increase patrolling in the East to reduce factional violence, Dhanapala responded. The LTTE, however, might respond best to pressure from the expatriate Tamil community, which finances, either voluntarily or involuntarily, much of its operations, he asserted, adding that he believes pressure from the Tamil diaspora helped persuade the LTTE to accept a ceasefire. He urged the USG to expand contact with the Tamil diaspora in the U.S. to this end.”
Dhanapala agreed that the split between Karuna, the Tigers’ former Eastern military commander, and LTTE headquarters appears to have ‘faded as an issue.’ The Tigers remain concerned, however, about their grip on the East, he suggested. The situation in the northeastern district of Trincomalee is ‘very worrisome,’ Dhanapala reported, where extensive LTTE bunkers could put Tiger artillery within reach of ships approaching the harbor. The LTTE’s ‘lock on security’ in Trincomalee infringes on the GSL’s responsibilities under the international law of the sea to safeguard shipping in those waters, he asserted. The Indian government has already raised these concerns to the Nordic-sponsored Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), he reported and suggested that the U.S. Embassy’s Defense Attache might raise it as well. The LTTE’s demand that the GSL swap LTTE detainees for two Sinhalese home guards the Tigers abducted in Trincomalee on August 18 has also increased tensions. Both the Government and SLMM have ruled out any such trade, he stated. In the north, the situation is Nagarkovil is ‘very, very tense.’ (Note: The GSL has accused the LTTE of expanding its forward defense line (FDL) in Nagarkovil, which is approximately 40 km north of Jaffna town. End note.) To make matters worse, the SLMM’s proposal for addressing this situation is ‘not even-handed,’ he complained; it recommended that both parties move back even though the GSL has not expanded its FDL.” the ambassador further wrote.

Stoking The Tinderbox Of Extremism

As a Sri Lankan and as a follower of the Buddhist philosophy I have every right to take umbrage at what is going on in our multi religious country under the guise of a “Buddhist nation”.
First and foremost the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka do not own the Buddhistphilosophy. Lord Buddha was not a Sinhalese and neither was he a Sri Lankan. And he certainly did not appoint the Sinhalese as the guardian of his philosophy!
In this context not everyone who drapes himself in a sacred saffron robe and shaves his head is a genuine representative of the Buddhist faith! Not every Buddhist in Sri Lanka regards this country as a “Sinhala Buddhist” nation! Not every Sri Lankan regards other religions and ethnic groups as inferior!
What we are now beginning to see is the Idiocracy stoking the tinderbox of ethno-religious extremism by manipulating Buddhist extremists to distract voters from mounting burning issues facing them today. If this trend continues unabated we are looking at another protracted war, this time on ethno- religious grounds, which would make the 30-year ‘War on Terrorism’ look like a cakewalk.
In this scenario I dread to think what might have happened if Rizana Nafeek had been a so-called Sinhala Buddhist!
The psychology behind using the sacred saffron robe and a shaved head is because to the gullible “Sinhala Buddhist” voter out there almost anything and everything draped in a saffron robe is worthy of falling flat on their faces and worshiping. Such is their reverence for the saffron robe. The demagogues know this only too well and therein lies the danger!  Only a real bankrupt demagogue will resort to using religious extremism to save face.
In the event these extremists are enjoying state patronage, then the demagogues fuelling the fire would be well advised to watch their backs, as these very same demons they are creating will end up strangling them with their own ‘satakayas’. Remember what became of President Premadasa after he gifted arms and weapons to the LTTE? Remember what Somarama did to Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike?
Some would regard this as a blessing in disguise in order to get rid of a current headache without looking at the bigger picture. We have all collectively suffered a 30 year war seasoned with a JVP insurrection in between and the last thing we need is an ethno-religious war which would undoubtedly be of much greater mind- boggling dimensions.
There are extremist pyromaniacs standing by waiting and watching to ignite the tinderbox of another protracted war. There may also be ‘other’ extremists waiting to hop on the bandwagon in order to create mayhem and they wouldn’t think twice before camouflaging themselves in saffron robes and taking up arms. In such a situation when the army is called upon to subdue them, how would they differentiate between a genuine Buddhist monk and a terrorist? Would they be required to turn their guns on the entire Buddhist clergy? Absit Omen!
The government’s decision to set up a special Committee to look into this issue will sound good only to the gullible but from experience we know how effective these committees really are. This is not just ‘another issue’ to be brushed under the rug!
Politicians may come and go but it is the legacy they leave behind that we the citizens of Sri Lanka must endure. May we not end up as a ‘Sinhala Buddhist Saudi Arabia’!
“With the destruction of the country as a peaceful one foremost in his mind, Satan Racism’s master plan was to eliminate all Men and Women of Letters who posed a threat to his objective – to create a breed of blundering idiots in the country who would finally destroy each other”- Where is the Miracle?

The Case Against Mohan Pieris’s Misconduct; Dismissed With Cost Awarded To The Respondents !

In a display of the route the highest court is taking since the impeachment, the Supreme Court today refused to grant leave to proceed in a Fundamental Rights application challenging the misconduct of Mohan Pieris during his tenure as Attorney General. Two judges of the Supreme Court refused to consider the submissions by the petitioner, upheld the objections by the Additional Solicitor General and dismissed the Application with costs awarded to the respondents.
Sathya Hettige
The case was taken up before a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice P.A. Ratnayake and comprising Justice Eva Wanasundera and Justice Sathya Hettige at Court Room No 403.
At the outset, Justice P.A. Ratnayake declined to hear the case citing personal reasons. Counsel for the petitioner, Nagananda Kodituwakku objected to Justice Hettige hearing the case on grounds that he was biased towardsPieris.
Justice Hettige refused to consider the submissions made by the Counsel Nagananda Kodituwakku, including a submission referring to his own disqualification from hearing the case. Justice Hettige simply went on to uphold the preliminary objections raised by the Additional Solicitor General and dismissed the Application with Cost awarded to the Respondents. The awarding of cost to Respondents had never been done before by the Supreme Court, especially in the Fundamental Rights Applications filed by the Citizens of this country.
“The decision in this case, amply demonstrates to which direction the Supreme Court is heading today.  It seems that the era of the independent judiciary has come to an end in this country and is now replaced with an absolutely dependent ‘Executive Judiciary’, headed by a disqualified person appointed to the Office of the Chief Justice. All this time the people of this country had faith in the Judiciary that it would exercise the ‘peoples’ judicial power’ faithfully and independently and honor the trust placed in it by the people,.” a senior lawyer told Colombo Telegraph.
After Justice Ratnayake refused to hear the case on ‘personal grounds’ and then an application was made by the Additional Solicitor General Shavindra Fernando to hear the case by the other two judges. Then the Counsel for the Petitioner, Nagananda Kodituwakku, objected ‘Hettige J taking part in the hearing’ and made an application to re-fix the case for an earlier date. The said objection was raised on the basis that Hettige J was biased towards Mohan Pieris, as he had disregarded a motion filed by the Petitioner on 04th July 2012, seeking an early date (11th 12th or 13th July 2012) to support the application and instead fixed the case for support for 06th September 2012. It was further submitted to Court that the Petitioner filed the said Motion, since the case which was due to support on 02nd July 2012 had been called in Court with no notice to the Petitioner on 21st of June 2012, and had been postponed for support on 06th Sep 2012.
It was further submitted, that Justice Hettige’s conduct was reported to the CJ Shirani Bandaranayake by the Petitioner by way of an affidavit dated 04th July 2012 and as a result CJ intervened and Hettige J was compelled to reverse his order allowing the petitioner to support the matter on 05th July 2012.
The Additional Solicitor General, Shavendra Fernando then took a preliminary objection to the hearing, on the basis that the original Petition, filed by the Petitioner dated 24th September 2010, does allege that the Supreme Court was responsible for the right violation, which is not an executive action and hence that the application dated 24th September 2010 should be dismissed and the Petitioner should not be allowed to support any amended application thereafter filed in Court.
In response to these submissions the Counsel for the Petitioner, Nagananda Kodituwakku submitted to the Court that the Petitioner does not rely on the Petition dated 24th September 2010, which was amended with the permission of the Court (comprised of Marsoof J, Imam J and Suresh Chandra J), on 05th December 2011, after the Counsel Nagananda Kodituwakku was retained by the Petitioner, in place of Upul Jayasooriya. The Petitioner had reported Counsel Upul Jayasooriya to the CJ by way of an affidavit (22nd November 2011) for his professional misconduct of withdrawing the affidavit filed by the Director General of Customs (seeking the disenrollment of Mohan Pieris for his professional misconduct) and also citing Mohan Pieris only in his official capacity and thereafter abandoning the Petitioner. It was further submitted by the Counsel Nagananda Kodituwakku that the bench chaired by Marsoof J, on 05th December 2011 had allowed the Petitioner to amend the application with ‘specific permission’ to include amendments the Petitioner wished to make, ‘reflecting the allege misconduct and dishonesty of Mohan Peiris’ as reported by the Director General of Customs. And accordingly the Petition dated 23rd December 2011 was filed in Court and the Petitioner only relied on that Petition.
Justice Hettige refused to consider the said submissions made by the Counsel Nagananda Kodituwakku, including the one referring to his disqualification from hearing the case.

Impeachment Of CJ Was Unlawful: Dramatic Failure Of GoSL To Peruse Meaningful Reconciliation, Human Rights – Jason Kenney

Ongoing failure of the Sri Lankan government to deal with reconciliation in post-war environment,  failure to produce any meaningful accountability for crimes committed during and after the civil war, general failure to protect and strengthen human rights and the rule of law are all confirming statement of Prime Minister Harper, if we do not see significant progress in reconciliation, accountability and human rights then the Prime minster will disinclined to attend Commonwealth Heads of Government in Colombo, says Jason Kenney, the Canadian Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism.
Jason Kenney
The minster made above remarks in a media round-table discussion about his recent trip to Sri Lanka, in Markham Ontario on January 26, 2013.
The meetings confirmed our view and our concern there has been a dramatic failure of the Government to peruse the opportunity for meaningful reconciliation, human rights, dealing with reports of disappearances, lack of accountability of serious and violent crimes, excessive militarization of the north east, said Jason Kenney.
He also said during his trip he met with or talked to TNA MP. Sumanthiran, Catholic Bishop of Mannar – Rayappu Joseph, Non-governmental organizations, Sri Lanka and Tamil NGOs. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G. L Peiris, Deputy Foreign Minister Perera, Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Impeachment of Sri Lankan Chief Justice was unlawful and in conflict with the norms of the Commonwealth, there have been some efforts by the Government of SL in resettling refugees but generally the whole situation is discouraging and many cases of reports from NGOs is that  the political situation is deteriorating rather than improving, he further said.

‘Sri Lanka Under More International Scrutiny’ – British Parliamentary Under Secretary Alistair Burt

British Under Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Alistair Burt praised Sri Lanka’s progress since the end of the war on a visit to the island, but warned that as the proposed host of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this year, the country will be under even more intense scrutiny from the international community.
Alistair Burt
Stressing that economic development alone could not meet the country’s post-conflict challenges, the UK Minister remarked that Britain is yet to decide on its level of attendance at CHOGM in Sri Lanka in November, but stressed that they would be looking to the hosts to demonstrate commitment to upholding commonwealth values of good governance and democratic principles, adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights. “This will help ensure a well-attended and successful meeting,” he noted.
Asked if the Queen would attend CHOGM in Colombo this year, Minister Burt responded the British Government did not make that decision. A decision on the monarch’s attendance would be made by Buckingham Palace in consultation with the Commonwealth, he said.
Burt was presenting a lecture entitled Sri Lanka – 2013 and Beyond organized by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies and the British High Commission, Colombo where he spoke candidly of Sri Lanka’s challenges in the post-conflict phase.
He said that the UK, UN and others have expressed deep concern at the recent impeachment and dismissal of Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice because rule of law is crucial to long term prosperity and judicial independence is a core principle in free countries. He said that as a candid friend of Sri Lanka, the UK spoke frankly to Colombo about the challenges.
“We believe in maintaining independent institutions in encouraging individuals to speak out and engage constructively in debate. The rule of law is crucial to long term prosperity. Respect for our legal systems is part of the cultural heritage of both the UK and Sri Lanka. as a lawyer myself, it is a principle I feel particularly strongly about,” the Minister said.
He also drew the corelation between business, investment and a robust justice system with mechanisms to independently resolve disputes.
“And the concepts found within our legal systems, certainty of contract, non-retroactivity and the equal application of laws are the foundation for business and growth,” the British Minister explained.
“It is why we are so concerned to see individuals brought to justice in particular cases of violent attack, it simply cannot be right for the accused to be walking free,” he said.
Pulling no punches and quoting from the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Report Commissioned by the Government of Sri Lanka, Burt said that “the rule of law must prevail, regardless of the political links of alleged wrong-doers.”  He said that he had made clear to Ministers during his visit to Colombo that more work was needed to “deliver the path to reconciliation that the President has frequently advocated.”
Mr. Burt referred to British Prime Minister David Cameron’s remarks as the co-chair of the panel reviewing the UK Millenium development goals, where he referred to the ‘golden thread of development’. “True prosperity is not possible without good governance, property rights and the rule of law effective public services and strong civil institutions, free and fair trade and open markets,” he said.
“These are the reasons why I have welcomed the LLRC report. And why we continue to encourage the Sri Lankan Government to take concrete action to implement its constructive recommendations and why the UK speaks franks to the Sri Lankan Government about what more we believe it needs to do to ensure peace and prosperity in your country,” the British Minister said.
During his visit, Burt said he had encouraged the Government in Colombo to minimize red tape and address corruption to set a more attractive climate for investors. “I have welcomed the end of the war and the end of horrific LTTE terrorism in Sri Lanka. But I have also called on all parties to uphold civil and political freedoms and for the Government to set an example,” he said.
In an impromptu response to the Minister’s lecture and a brief Q&A session, Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris queried whether “candid” friends of Sri Lanka believed that bringing resolution after resolution was the right way to target a country that was just finding its feet after a brutal conflict. Peiris also raised the question of why Sri Lanka was being targeted while so many other nations were being shown leniency by the international community. “If it is about human rights or morals and ethical values, then they must apply across the board,” Peiris said.

Who Will Get The Rolls Royce Ghost Cars After The CHOGM ?

“Who will get the Rolls Royce Ghost cars after the Commonwealth Heads of State Meeting? Bet the Rajapaksa clan is at the head of the queue and the poor tax payer and money set aside for development of the land will be utilized to run these cars for the rest of their days” an anonymous, widely circulated email asks and predicts.
Meanwhile, the United National Party (UNP) Friday urged the government to investigate the import of a ‘Rolls Royce Ghost’ luxury vehicle.
UNP parliamentarian and economist Harsha De Silva told a news conference that the entire transaction needed to be investigated because of the discrepancy between the price listed by the Rolls Royce Company and the price stated in the Customs declaration.
“The Customs has released the car after a payment of Rs.61 million by way of taxes on the declaration made by the importer that the luxury vehicle cost only US$175 000. But the Company says otherwise. It states that the Rolls Royce Ghost car costs nearly US$350 000, which means that the tax has to be twice the amount paid. We are not complaining or saying that anyone has stolen anything, what we are asking is for a transparent investigation into the matter,” Dr. De Silva said.

Beyonce admits miming National Anthem

Singer Beyonce Knowles has finally admitted lip synching her performance of the American national anthem at the inauguration of President Obama last month.
She told reporters that she was a "perfectionist" and - due to lack of rehearsal time - "did not feel comfortable taking a risk".
"I wanted to make the President and my country proud, so I decided to lip synch to my pre-recorded track."
"I'm very proud of my performance," she said.
The star opened the press conference in New Orleans and asked the reporters to stand before she performed a live rendition of the national anthem.

Women appointed to an all-men council in Saudi

RIYADH – In a historic decision in the Gulf country, Saudi King Abdullah has appointed women to a fifth of the seats in the all-men Shura Council, which advises the government on new legislation.

"Women... will enjoy full rights of membership, be committed to their duties, responsibilities and assume their jobs," the King said according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), BBC reported on Friday, January 11.
King Abdullah first announced that he was planning to name women to the Shura Council in 2011, when he also said they would be allowed to vote and stand as candidates in the 2015 municipal elections.
Issuing two royal decrees on Friday, the King amended an article in the Shura Council's statute to guarantee women representation on the body, while the other named the 150 members, among them 30 women.
The king said he had consulted religious scholars, who had approved the participation of women in accordance with Shari`ah (Islamic law).

Women will be seated in a special area and enter the council through a separate door so as not to mix with their male colleagues.
To comply with the kingdom's rigorous policy of gender segregation, the Shura council building must now be altered to include a separate entrance for women, the decree said.
The council has had 12 women "advisers" since 2006, but women still have little role in public life in the religiously conservative kingdom, the birthplace of Islam.

Welcomed
The new decrees were welcomed by Saudi activist women including female Saudi novelist Badriya al-Bishr as a "promise kept" by the king.
"It is a good surprise and a promise that has been kept," by the king, al-Bishr told Agence France Presse (AFP) on Friday.
The 30 chosen women include university graduates, human rights activists and two princesses.
Also among them is ThurayaObaid, a veteran UN administrator who served notably as executive director of the UN Development Program and undersecretary general of the world body.
"They are the cream of the crop," Bishr told AFP.
"The king is determined to place women in the limelight," Bishr added, and voiced hope that her Saudi sisters "will secure more rights" in the future.
Abdullah had been carefully treading towards change, introducing municipal elections for the first time in 2005.
In 2011 he granted women the right to vote and run as candidates in the next local election, set for 2015, and said he would also name them to the Shura Council because "we refuse marginalizing women's role in the Saudi society in all fields."
Saudi Arabia has seen many changes since Abdullah became king in 2005.
Norah al-Fayez became the first woman ever named to a ministerial post in 2009 when she was given named deputy education minister for women's education.
More recently, Saudi women broke ground when two of them took part in the London Olympics.
Middle distance runner Sarah Attar made history on August 8, becoming the first female athlete to represent Saudi Arabia in Olympics track and field, just days after WojdanShaherkani appeared in the judo competition.
